Romy Treebusch
Her simultaneous aversion to (and admiration for) beauty is what gives Romy Treebusch her photographic raison d’être. Drawn to the surface of things — skin, light, colour and form — her work explores how beauty can feel both precise and intensely human.
Working primarily in a controlled studio environment, Romy constructs her images with a sharp eye for composition, light and colour. Her practice often begins with the art of set building: carefully constructed environments that allow fashion, beauty and subject to exist within a deliberate visual system, forming graphic, sculptural and modern images.
Romy’s fascination with her subjects creates a subtle tension in her photography, a mysterious vulnerability that invites viewers to linger just a little longer than feels comfortable. Her images often bring viewers uncomfortably close, making beauty not only visible, but almost tangible. While she is known for her warm, powerful colour palettes, her work moves just as naturally into black and white.
